Nurturing a Growth Mindset: Mindset and Goal Setting

Updated: May 24

“Believing is seeing, not the other way around.”, Bob Proctor

In the last article, I delved into mindset as a multifaceted concept that broadly impacts our lives. In this article, I aim to give you a deeper perspective on how mindset empowers us to succeed in several areas of life, including goal setting.

Conquering Ingrained Beliefs

One of the most difficult challenges we face when addressing our mindset is conquering ingrained old beliefs. Past experiences, societal and educational conditioning, and cultural norms may have formed these beliefs. They are deeply rooted in our psyche and can often hinder personal and professional growth. For instance, you might believe you're not suited for leadership because you struggled with math in school or that your lack of organization skills disqualifies you from entrepreneurship. Common challenges are self-doubt, fear of change, and resistance to novelty.

However, it is possible to dismantle these barriers and cultivate a mindset primed for success and fulfillment through internal individual work.

Internal work involves deep introspection and a willingness to challenge and reshape existing beliefs. This work will lead to greater self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and self-improvement. You can do this on your own or seek the help of professional coaching services or a mentor who will guide you through this journey.

Paradigms and Mindset

Still, it's essential to be aware that new ideas and perspectives will inevitably encounter resistance, both from within yourselves and societal paradigms.

Paradigms are collections of beliefs held by groups of people that powerfully influence our thoughts, actions, and interactions with the world. Breaking free from these limiting paradigms requires courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to personal development. Above all, it requires focus on the main purpose of doing it – your main and authentic goal.

Mindset and Goal Setting

Our mindset influences how we perceive the world around us. And this perception influences what we perceive as possible. Hence, our mindset impacts the goals we set for ourselves and how we act toward them. To set a goal, we need to make a decision. Deciding involves assessing the value of a goal. And actions are an effect of a decision. Actions are guided by a genuine and committed intention in our minds.

The more we value something, the more motivation we will have to pursue what’s needed to accomplish it.

Mindset is closely linked to the goals we set as it shapes the environment in which we set them.

This involves:

Sculpture of a man with the hand on his head

-              the goals we can conceive in the first place – we cannot set a goal if we cannot envision it - you can't aim to go to the sea if you're not aware of its existence;

-              the goals we perceive as possible, given the way we approach our development and learning capacity – you can’t expect to swim in the sea if you don’t believe you can learn how to swim;

-              the extent of disruption or boldness of our goals, given our perceived tolerance for taking risks and disrupting installed paradigms – you won’t set a goal such as learning to surf if you’re not willing to take the risk of submerging your head underwater.

People with a growth mindset tend to set bolder goals because they believe in their learning and personal development capacity. In contrast, someone with a fixed mindset may prioritize maintaining a sense of security and avoiding failure, leading to more conservative goal-setting.

Setting goals with the correct mindset is paramount to success.

We must approach our goals with enthusiasm and a clear sense of purpose, knowing that they align with our values and aspirations. We must be able to vividly envision the goal outcome in our minds. This has a physiological explanation. According to Dr. Andrew Huberman, it increases systolic blood pressure and adrenaline release, preparing the body for action. Although it might also be important to look at the failure scenario, the point here is that the main focus has to be on the desired outcome (more on goal setting in upcoming articles! Stay tuned).

And remember, don’t underestimate the power of decision, as this is the first step toward any process of change.

Mindset and Self-Efficacy

Committing wholeheartedly to our goals and dreams not only fuels our motivation but also inspires and energizes those around us. It creates a supportive environment conducive to growth and achievement. Our commitment reinforces our determination to overcome obstacles and achieve success. And as we make progress, our belief in what’s possible also grows stronger. To delve deeper into this concept, explore Bandura's Self-Efficacy theory.
